Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe in Egypt?

For the most part, yes! Like any place there are concerns. Traffic is chaotic and unpredictable, building codes are either non-existent or not enforced, there are concerns about harrasment (especially if you are a woman), and there are regions of the country where you should not go.

How do I get around ?

There are so many options! If you’re in Cairo or Alexandria just call an Uber! You can also hale a cab in most cities. Cairo has a Metro train that will get you around (it’s crowded but fairly safe. There are special cars for women only). There is a confusing minibus system for the very adventurous travelers. It’s very easy to figure out in Alexandria since they just go back and forth along the Corniche (waterfront).

There are airports in most of the major tourist destinations with flights throughout the day.

You can take the passenger train from Ramses station in Cairo to Alexandria. It’s a nice ride through the Nile delta.

What should I eat?

Traditional foods include molokaia, falafel, fuul, koshari, and more.

How much should I tip?

This is a hard question, and there are lots of challenges with tipping in Egypt. It’s often really hard to keep small bills available for tipping because people use them so much. You will need lots of 5EGP, 10EGP, and 20EGP notes to hand out. So break as many big bills as you can when it’s available and try to keep small bills accessible.
